Open-source tools for benevolent inefficiency.

ABOUT

Everything about your phone is intentionally designed to keep you staring at it. The screen is always on, the notifications are always pushing, the feed is always refreshing.

Technu.de tools won't help you do anything faster or better. But they could help you be a little more intentional with how you choose to engage with your devices.

iOS APP

Dumphone is an open source iOS app for temporarily dumping smartphone features using NFC tags.

Dumphone iOS app interface

Users can create profiles that lock different apps when tapped with an NFC tag. Tap again, and the apps are available once more. Different profiles and different tags mean that users can dump access during a commute, throughout the workday, or before going to bed.

macOS APP

Oblique Pauses is a free macOS app that forces the user to disengage with the screen for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

The non-dismissible modal features one of Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt's Oblique Strategies, giving the user a prompt to mull over while they temporarily disengage with their machine.

SCREEN SHIELD

Screen shields are DIY smart device covers that provide moments of friction before eyes connect with screens. That friction provides the user a chance to create a new habit or behavior.

Screen shields are especially useful during vacations and trips when access to a smart device is necessary, but long-standing habits translate into less engagement with new experiences.

HISTORY

Technu.de is a subsidiary of Technonudity, the philosophical movement founded in early 21st century Boston, Massachusetts by B&C Lefferts Corp. Technonudity is grounded in the conceptual framework of digital de-escalation. Powered by sacred rituals of online detox, Technonudity is practiced daily by adherents across the world.

Technu.de operates as an activist arm of this belief system. Borne of the question "What if we looked at our screens a lot more, to look at our screens slightly less," Technu.de develops open-source products that create friction for digital devices. These tools are designed to support individuals in their search for personal digital equilibrium.

Whether you're a Technonudity devotee looking to self-enforce screen-time limits or simply tech-nude-curious, we hope these tools provide an avenue for you to meaningfully control your own digital consumption.
